Midstackers, how is March so far for you?
I’m not going to lie. These last few weeks have not been my most productive. Last month I had a very nasty case of the flu, and I still feel like I have some lingering fatigue and brain fog. And also the world feels scary and overwhelming and sometimes crushing so there’s that.
I’d love for you to share in the comments a Post or a Note that you think would connect with our Midstack community.
Below are a few essays and articles that I’ve loved from our Midstack community and from other midlife writers that might be useful or inspiring to Midstackers. During the past month I’ve been particularly thinking about how to stay creative, inspired, and persistent during times like this.
“Are You Failing Or Just Impatient?” I love these small letters of encouragement from Robin Cangie (she/her) of Creative Letters. This one particularly spoke to me.
“Ten Steps To A Middling Substack” by Catherine Palmer. I’ve already given a shout-out to this insightful and vulnerable post on Notes. Catherine gave us a preview of her essay during our last Midstack meetup.
“What To Read When Absolutely Nothing Goes In” by Sam Baker. Oh, I can relate to this “reluctance to read” in this present moment that she describes. Lots of terrific suggestions for what to read now, no matter how you’re feeling.
“Is It Time To Pivot Your Newsletter? Try This 3-Step Pressure Test” by Amanda B. Hinton. Amanda’s Substack The Editing Spectrum is one of my very favorite new Substacks. (It’s not really new, just new to me.) I find her writing to be a perfect blend of inspiring, relatable, calm, useful, and reassuring. I know she’d be a favorite of many Midstackers, if she isn’t already. In our Midstack meetups I’ve heard many of these questions (“Why is it so hard for me to keep writing about this subject?” “Do I need to shift the direction of my Substack?” “Should I write about something else?”), and Hinton provides a lot of to think about.

I recently wrote a guest post as a collab with Lisa Bolin of Flucking Flourishing about– being untethered in midlife and the lessons I'm learning.

It's been a total unraveling.
I wrote about moving through the melancholy season of late winter, and grieving my father:
