What a great tool to connect. I am still new to Substack and trying to find my footing. I am a licensed psychologist and mom, so naturally I really enjoy reading/writing anything related to mental health and parenting!

Hi Vanessa, I write about investing in women’s health. Mental health is right up my alley as women suffer disproportionately from mental health issues. Would love to connect and collaborate. Much love Maryann

I love this! A number of my most committed readers have come from like minded substacks and I LOVE recommending newsletters my audience will adore -

If you write about anything related to family life - life after divorce, fertility, family pivots, sandwich generation, caregiving, childfree lifestyles, child-full lifestyles etc. Please let me know so I can follow and recommend you!

If you are looking for a newsletter celebrating all paths to family and all definitions of family, written by a solo mom by choice currently facing secondary infertility in her 40's. Please share mine - lots of reflections around hopes, dreams, life changes, and most importantly, "What is Family". Please recommend mine.

https://heydary.substack.com/ https://lauradkimball.substack.com/ I love the sound of your newsletter Julia! My twin sister and I write together about once a month and we both write about family life. I have 2 kids who are 5 and 7 yo and I have written about being the default parent and solo parenting while married to a HS soccer coach.

My sister specifically has dealt with infertility and is still TTC a second living child after 3 miscarriages following the birth of my soon to be 5 yo niece. We also enjoy revisiting shows we watched as a family and have written about Gilmore Girls and The O.C., and currently working on a piece about Everwood that we plan to publish this Friday.

The topics you and your sister write about sound so relatable. I also love that you and your sister get together to share in the writing! Sounds lovely! I look forward to checking out your work.

I see my sister has already linked my Substack (thank you Lizzy for always sharing and recommending my writing), but I will add my own thoughts as well. Linked here again: For This Child We Have Prayed https://lauradkimball.substack.com/

My Substack is mostly about infertility and grapples with those complicated feelings of TTC a second living child after having 3 miscarriages (there’s a lot of anxiety and going back and forth on any given day about how it feels to still be trying after being in TTC mode off and on since 2015 when we started trying to have our first child).

We have been trying to conceive our second child since September of 2020 (although our initial approach was “not trying, not preventing” officially; we began actually trying to time what we were doing again when my second miscarriage finally resolved in July of 2021; we also had a 3rd miscarriage in January of 2023, but it was such an early miscarriage, it quickly resolved, and we didn’t really have to wait to start trying again that time).

Elizabeth and I love writing together as well, and the posts we co-author are so fun to collaborate on (I also love editing Elizabeth’s work because she is so open to my feedback, and I feel like we have a good approach to collaboration).

My daughter Hannah will be 5 this month, so I’m excited to share more about family life in my comments on other publications as well in addition to writing my own posts.

Hi Laura, I love what you write about. I write about investments into women’s health. For many decades women’s health has been underfunded and underresearched. Topics like infertility (primary and secondary, reproductive health and other health issues which affect women have traditionally not had a lot of funding. That is now changing and we need human stories like yours to illustrate how investing in women’s health is not just for financial benefits but a moral imperative. I will follow you and would appreciate if you could recommend my Substack too. Much love, Maryann

This sounds right up my alley and I can’t wait to dig into your writing! I write about many of the things on your list (life after divorce, sole parenting, mom guilt, family pivots, but also career pivots and life after elected office, which gave me some unique insights into the policies that impact us). I’m all about flipping the script on the status quo.

My newsletter, Estranged, is for people dealing with family estrangement--either being the one cut off or being the one initiating cut off. The focus is on understanding, not on blame or venting, but on curiosity and investigation of how we move through life with these family struggles.

Expand full comment

Estrangement is a component of my writing, but not the main focus. Being estranged from a couple different family members and on the verge of estrangement with another, I’m interested in how we come to decide when enough is enough and if we can ever truly let go. I look forward to exploring your writing!

My newsletter, Write Out of Hiding, is very new. I have many topics I’d like to write about around the theme of self-discovery and “no more secrets,” beginning with the effects unexpected DNA discoveries have on individuals and their family relationships.

I am excited to read more about estrangement! My newsletter and podcast focus on all family structures but we have yet to cover estrangement. Maybe we can find a way to collaborate

Hi Lovely Midlife writers and creators. I'm Kaarin, and I write A Life Unpacked, a newsletter from the perspective of a woman in mid-life who loves traveling the world and is on a quest to find her place in it. I cover all the sticky topics like marriage, relationships with adult kids, caregiving, personal identity, and yes, travel. I love creating authentic -- and hopefully powerful -- conversations about what we'll take with us and what we'll leave behind as we travel the world and the next stage of life. I hope you'll come along. You can find me here: https://alifeunpacked.substack.com/

Thank you Jessica, I deeply appreciate that you and this post exist. You’re absolutely right. Recommendations feel like a great tool to affirm and be affirmed.

I am Deb Kelner, a soon to be 60 year old publishing a serial “MOMoir” about my experiences and self discoveries during my 30 years of parenting my neuro-divergent family. I write about what I’ve learned through my career as an early childhood educator and what I’ve learned as a human with sensory processing differences. I talk about autism, sensory regulation, big emotions, accommodations, and finding supportive communities.

This is a great list. I'm a former celebrity makeup artist and write a lot about beauty and beauty culture. I'm also a beauty historian and author. I started Hello Gorgeous! (Named after my first book Hello Gorgeous! Beauty Products in America '40s-'60s) as a place to discuss beauty for women (and other beautiful creatures) 40+. It's product and lifestyle-centric with honest takes on beauty and pop culture. And I can be much more matter of fact than I am in the outlets I write for. I hope you'll sign up, come visit and share if possible.

My Substack is titled prism, and my audience is mostly women in midlife. 😊 I'm a midlife coach, psychotherapist, art therapist, artist, and author of the book Midlife Emergence. prism is a space where I explore themes like: the messy opportunities of midlife, being queer and the experience of coming out later in life, the creative process, hexing the patriarchy, relationships, intimacy, + connection of all flavors, wellness (of soul + of soma), the sacred + the profane, and much more. I also curate cool, quirky, useful, and interesting shit for you, such as: music, podcasts, books, movies, tv, poetry, quotes, comedy, snacks, and ways of decorating + expressing the self.

I am still struggling to "get into" Substack despite having been on it for about a year. Finding this community is helping <3

I am a midlife mom to two teenage boys who shares an intimate essay once a month on a current parent-topic (i.e., traditional lifestyle is ok, navigating summer, moving my parents from our childhood lake house) then I also include a round-up of things I love plus travel, food, home and parenting articles we posted on the blog that month.

Hey Julia! Looks like a fabulous newsletter. I like your title and description. At 60 I’d love to figure out the path to grandchildren but 😂I don’t know that your publication can help me with that. Wouldn’t it be great though if there was a listing somewhere for created families to find humans in their area who were looking to love and be supportive of young families in exchange for being loved and supported as well?! This is a theoretical concept- not necessarily something I’m suggesting for you. All best!

Actually there is a great mental model for this - check out Stand in Pride - this is a group that supports members of the LGBTQ+ community who are estranged from their families. If you need someone to teach you a skill, or help you with a resume, or even come to your wedding, members of this community will "stand in" as your family! I wonder if there is a way to create something for people who have tons of maternal and grand-maternal (is that a thing?) love to give? Things like showing up when someone is sick and needs a bowl of soup or offering advice etc?

Expand full comment

I am signed up with Stand in Pride but have yet to have been called to service. Fabulous organization. Yes, I think in addition to Stand in Pride it would be marvelous to create (don't know that I have the required techinical skills to create such a site) a community based directory of older people (perhaps past the age of active parenting- though I'm 60 and still "actively" parenting) with maternal/ paternal/ general un-gendered love to give to other families (of whatever kind) that want to receive and give love. Exactly like showing up at school plays or living a batch of soup on a doorstep or stepping in as a babysitter....

I had a question after yesterday's zoom about audience. I don't write specifically for a midlife female audience. I write cultural commentary about a variety of topics as explorations of modern and future society and human behavior. I am a midlife woman, so that is my POV, but I am shooting for a gender-inclusive audience. I frequently write about things like trends in women's rights, elder care, parenting because they are my experience. But I also write about politics, sports, gender identity, and tech dependence. Does anyone else feel that their lens is midlife women, but not their sole audience? Would love to hear from you.

After going through all of the publications that have become a part of Midstack, I would say this might be the case for quite a few Substacks in this community! As for me, I subscribe to several Substacks written by writers very different than my own demographic but whose perspective I still find important and interesting. You are definitely not alone!

I'm writing about Fidelity, Food and Fitness as a midlife truth-teller, certified personal trainer, running and nutrition coach. Also a born-again writer, mother, wife, balance seeker, reader, foodie, and wannabe homesteader. The pieces I'm posting are about all of these things and more- stories with recipes attached, what it means to live authentically, shifting relationships- examining various facets of midlife from the different perspectives of a complex human woman. I also plan to delve into dysfunction within the fitness industry and how it is tied to diet culture and body image struggles in midlife.

My substack Out for Stars is a home for those who feel different. In weekly posts, I read poems aloud and meditate on them, talk about nature and books, and share essays about my experience as a late-diagnosed autistic woman. I also dive into my various special interests, which include, among others, Dorothy Sayers and the Indigo Girls. If you are looking for books, beauty, meaning, and unique ways of walking through the world, please stop by. :)
